So, naturally, you try to use all of the free versions of everything you need to get your business started.

This may sound like a smart decision, but it’s actually not.

Especially not when it comes to the website platform you choose to build your website on.

The free options often cause more problems and cost you even more money down the road when you try to fix everything.

Not to mention the cost of your time that you waste trying to figure everything out.

There are costs that come with a business, including costs for running your website. You need to be aware of this.

If you’re hoping for a concrete price on how much it costs to run a website, you’re out of luck. Because honestly, it depends. There are so many variables, that it depends on you and your business.

So today I wanted to share with you the cost of running a Squarespace website (including the Squarespace plans) and some options for keeping your website and business up and running efficiently.

Squarespace Pricing Plans

There are 2 fixed costs you need to plan to pay for to get and keep your website up and running. Think of these as your non-negotiables.

Squarespace Plans

Squarespace is an all in one platform, you get your website, hosting, security, templates, and support all in one. And if you want you can add a shop and/or a blog at no additional cost!

Squarespace offers four different pricing plans. Each, of course, offering different features, which we will get to in a minute. But basically they are broken up into two groups. These first two are more for bloggers and the second two are for online stores.

Notice that the large numbers are the prices per month when you pay for the full year in advanced. If you pay monthly, you can see the prices a little smaller on the right side.


SQUARESPACE PERSONAL PLAN ($12/MONTH)

Starting with the lowest plan and working our way up, here are the features listed, taken right from the pricing page:

  • Unlimited bandwidth and storage

  • Mobile-optimized website

  • Website metrics

  • Free custom domain (with annual purchase)

  • SSL security included

  • 24/7 customer support

  • Limited to 2 contributors

This all basically means you can grow your business without worrying about how many pages you have on your website. Your website will look beautiful on desktop and mobile.

You have access to analytics. You can purchase (or get it free if you pay for the whole year) your domain through Squarespace so you don’t have to worry about where to buy it or how to connect it.

Squarespace provides security for your website so all information is safe. 24/7 access to support so you can always get answers to your questions about your website. Only two people can contribute to the website.


SQUARESPACE BUSINESS PLAN ($18/MONTH)

Everything the last plan offers plus…

  • Unlimited contributors

  • Professional email from Google (only for new G Suite users)

  • $100 Google ads credit

  • Promotional pop-ups

  • Fully integrated e-commerce

  • Sell unlimited products and accept doantions

  • 3% transaction fee

  • Mobile information bar

  • Complete customization through CSS and Javascript

  • Premium blocks and integrations

  • Announcement bar

Now this all means you can have an unlimited number of contributors on your website. You get a free year of G Suite as long as you are a new user of G Suite and purchase your domain through Squarespace. G Suite is a professional email address through Google but instead of @ gmail. com it’s @ yourdomainname. com.

For US and Canada Squarespace users you get $100 Google ads credit when you spend your first $25. Promotional pop-ups so you can create your own pop-ups on your website. You can have a shop on your website but Squarespace takes 3% of every transaction on top of the payment provider’s fees.

A mobile information bar allows your number, email address, business hours, and a map to be highlighted on mobile. You are able to customize your website even further by inserting CSS and Javascript if you know how to use code.

You have the ability to extend your website with integrations. An announcement bar is the little bar at the top of some people’s websites where they announce something such as a sale.

SQUARESPACE BASIC PLAN FOR ONLINE STORES ($26/MONTH)

Everything the last plan offers plus…

  • No transaction fees

  • Checkout on your domain

  • Powerful commerce metrics

  • Inventory, orders, tax, coupons

  • Label printing via ShipStation

  • Integrated accounting via Xero

  • Customer accounts

  • Products on Instagram

The last plan did offer some features for an online shop, but they aren’t exactly the best, and aren’t really worth it if you plan to sell a high number of products on your website.

This plan is the lower plan for the e-commerce website options on Squarespace.

These features basically mean that you can actually have your customers checkout on your domain and customize your checkout (it is mobile-optimized as well). Easy access to analytics about how your shop and sales are doing. Inventory, orders, tax, and coupons are available on your website for easy access.

You can connect your Squarespace shop to your ShipStation account to sync your orders and print your labels. Squarespace will sync to your Xero account to automatically keep track of your revenue, expenses, and taxes, making accounting easy for you.

You can have the option for your customers to create accounts so they can checkout faster which means more sales for you! Sync your products with your Facebook’s shop and tag your products on your Instagram and Facebook.


SQUARESPACE ADVANCED PLAN FOR ONLINE STORES ($40/MONTH)

Everything the last plan offers plus…

  • Subscriptions

  • Abandoned cart autorecovery

  • Advanced shipping

  • Gift cards

This all means that you can offer subscriptions on products so you can set up recurring payments weekly or monthly. Abandoned cart autorecovery means if someone puts your product in their shopping cart and leaves without buying, they will get sent a reminder which will help increase your sales.

Advanced shipping means that you can automatically calculate real time shipping rates for USPS, UPS, and FedEx. You can also offer gift cards for your customers to purchase.

How to decide which plan to choose

Of course, this really depends on your business and where you want your business to go.

For most people I recommend the Business Plan. It has everything you would need to get a business website up and running.

But, if you’re a Photographer and only want a website to showcase your images, then the Personal Plan could be enough for you.

Or, if you want to sell multiple items on your website then the Basic Plan would be a great place to start and maybe plan to eventually get the Advanced Plan.

Like I said, it all depends on you and your business.

You can always change the plan you are on if you find it isn’t enough for you or if it’s more than you need.

Squarespace does offer a 10% discount code to anyone who opens a new account with them and a special coupon code for students.


Domain

The second fixed cost for running a website is the domain.

You may have noticed that all of the plans offer a free domain for the first year if you pay annually.

This is a great thing to take advantage of when you are trying to cut down on costs while starting up your business. Just remember that you will have to pay it yearly after that first year.

Expect to pay $10-20 per year for a domain.

You can also purchase your domain from a third-party such as GoDaddy, Google Domains, NameCheap, etc.

It’s up to you.

Some people prefer to have their domain purchased through Squarespace that way everything is kept together, making it simple to keep track of everything.

Others like to purchase them from a third-party because they don’t like having all of their eggs in one basket.

If you did purchase your domain from a third-party but want it to be through Squarespace, you can have your domain transferred to Squarespace. Otherwise, you can just connect your third-party domain to your Squarespace website.

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter which you choose.

If for whatever reason you decide to leave Squarespace in the future, you are able to transfer your domain away from Squarespace.

So you’re never stuck with the decision you make.

How much does it cost to run a Squarespace website?

Additional Website Costs

After purchasing your Squarespace plan and domain, there are other costs you need to plan for to run your website.

Some of these may not apply to your website, but it’s good to be aware of them for the future.

Professional Email Address

You don’t want to be emailing people as your business with an email address such as yourdomainname @ gmail. com.

This looks unprofessional and your emails can actually get marked as spam if the person you are emailing doesn’t have your email address in their contacts.

Instead, you need a professional email address such as hello @ yourdomainname .com.

You may have noticed that when you purchase an annual Squarespace plan (on the Business Plan and up) you get a professional email from Google, free for the first year.

After the first year, you will need to pay $6 per month.


Email Service Provider

Every business needs to have an email list. If you don’t believe me, read my post The Importance of Having an Email List.

The cost of an email service provider varies depending on the provider you go with and the number of subscribers you have.

No matter what provider you choose, the larger your list, the more you will have to pay.

Because you are trying to cut costs you can start with a free email service provider, such as MailChimp or MailerLite.

I don’t personally have experience with MailerLite but I have heard great things about them.

MailChimp does have easy integration with Squarespace but it's just not user-friendly all around. So in my opinion, it’s not worth going through all of the frustration just so you don’t have to pay.

ConvertKit is a great paid option. It was designed by a blogger for bloggers and is run by bloggers. They have a lot of features to help you really grow your email list and business.

Social Media Schedulers

In order to get traffic to your website you need to market your website (along with SEO).

I know you might be thinking “But I don’t have a lot of money to spend, why would I pay for something I can do myself?”

Trust me, doing social media manually for your business is a lot of work and very time consuming!

You are better off paying for some low-cost schedulers to help save you a ton of time.

For Pinterest, you will want to get Tailwind. It’s only $9 a month but you can try it for free for a month using my link!

I strongly recommend you use Pinterest as a part of your marketing strategy!

For Facebook you can just use the scheduler built in Facebook, so free!

Instagram you can use Later, they do have paid plans but I just use the free plan and it works great for me!

Website Design

You can hire a web designer to design your website. This will cost you thousands of dollars up front.

And then, you’ll have to continue paying them anytime you want to make changes to your website or if you re-brand.

The more cost effective alternative is to design your website yourself.

With Squarespace it’s a lot easier than you may think.

They offer beautiful templates that are very clean and modern, so you really don’t have to do too much work to them.

But if you want them to look more customized, you can easily do that too with the content blocks and the drag and drop feature.

And don’t worry, with Squarespace you don’t need to know how to code to design your website. But if you do know code, there are places for you to insert it to customize your website even further.
