Common Branding Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
There are a few common mistakes entrepreneurs make when it comes to creating their brand. I want to help save you some time and energy by sharing some of these mistakes with you.
It’s a struggle when you have a brand that just doesn’t work. I want you to be able to get your brand right the first time!
And if you already are making these mistakes, that’s okay! Now you will be aware of them and know how to fix them.
Here are 4 branding mistakes and how to fix them:
1. Not Understanding What a Brand is
Some people think a brand just means their logo. But there is so much more to it than that!
Your brand defines your business. Yes your logo is apart of your brand. But your brand is also your voice, your mission, your values, colors, fonts, and photography.
When you think of your brand as just a logo you are going to struggle with having a real brand and having a real, successful business. Without knowing your brand, you won’t have consistency.
Take the time to really think of what your brand is and make it the right way. Or hire someone to help you and do most of the work for you!
2. Not Being Consistent
For those who don’t have an actual brand set, they can’t really be consistent and are probably just using whatever color or font or voice they feel like at the moment.
Some people do have a brand style guide but choose not to follow it. Again, just using whatever color or font or voice they feel like.
This creates a disconnect with the audience and makes the business seem unprofessional.
Make sure that when you create your brand style guide, you actually stick to it. Everywhere! This includes your website, blog posts, sale pages, all social media, anywhere your business is your brand needs to be present and consistent.
3. Not Having an Ideal Client
If you don’t have an ideal client in mind, then you aren’t really considering your audience. And you don’t know who you are trying to attract or who you are writing to. You are just doing things how you want.
When you don’t know your ideal customer, your brand and messaging won’t be attracting the right people. This all comes down to fewer readers and fewer leads which means less money for you!
Before working with a designer you should figure out who your business is for and tailor everything towards their interests. This involves a lot of research!
4. Following Trends
There are people who think following trends is the best way to go. This is tempting because you want your brand to be modern and a part of all the new cool things.
And sure it might be a good idea for the time being. But trends don’t last forever. You don’t want to have to change your brand and everything about your business the minute trends change. People wouldn’t be able to keep up and you would be exhausted and probably broke.
And if you do follow a trend but don’t change it after the trend is over, you will loose a lot of interest.
So make sure when designing your brand and website you aren’t doing something just because it’s the new thing that ALL the people are doing. Instead, create one that will last you for years to come!
Are you making any of these branding mistakes? If you are, that’s okay! You can easily fix them and make your brand solid and consistent. Don’t be hard on yourself because trust me, we all make mistakes!
